The “MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ” has represented the multifaceted and state of the art research and technological know-how in and around Mainz since 2008. Approximately 4,000 scientists represent variety and excellence in technology, research, teaching and academic advancement. Through activities organized by the “MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ” such as the “Science Fair in Mainz” or the Night of the Profs, the citizens of Mainz perceive science as an integral part of their city. As a result of this network of science, economics and society, their participants have come closer together and have intensified existing as well as created new co-operations. This has made Mainz the ideal breeding ground for new ideas and innovative development, one represented by a broad base.
The association has as its goal to continue to intensify and further solidify this network. This should involve not only further networking among universities located in Mainz and the surrounding area. In addition, the scientific infrastructure and companies should be encouraged to support research and science. In order to strengthen Mainz as a center of scientific research, the visibility of Mainz both nationally and internationally as a scientific region should be magnified. A further task of this association will be to initiate new projects and co-operations between members of the alliance and to offer a platform for scientific exchange.
Chairman of this newly founded association is Professor Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Muth from the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, and vice chairman is Professor Dr. Georg Krausch of the Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz. Jens Egler from the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry and Mag. Dominik Kimmel from the Roman-Germanic Central Museum of Mainz were elected as co-chairs. Treasurer is Professor Dr. Michael Maskos from the Institute for Microtechnology Mainz Ltd. The following institutions are also members: the Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz and the University Hospital of Mainz, the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, the Catholic University of Mainz, the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry and the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz, the Helmholz-Society, the Helmholtz-Institute Mainz, the Institute for Molecular Biology Ltd., TRON (Transnational Oncology at the University Hospital of the Johannes-.Gutenberg-University Mainz Ltd, the Leibniz Institute for European History, the Institute for Historical Geography at the University of Mainz, a registered association, RGZM (the Roman-Germanic Central Museum), the Museum of Natural Sciences Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate State Library of Natural History, BioNTech PLC, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical Company, IMM Institute for Microtechnology Mainz Ltd. and GENterprise GENOMICS.
The alliance already drew attention to itself at the beginning of this year with its membership in the network “Dual Career Network of the Metropolitan Region of Rhein-Main”. At present preparations are being made for the 12th Science Fair in Mainz, which is to make a new appearance at the Gutenbergplatz in Mainz this year on 14 and 15 September. In October this will be followed by the start of “Profiltalk”, an event to serve for internal exchange between members. Furthermore, in May of next year the alliance will be supporting the main convention of the German Alliance of Museums in Mainz.
