Max Planck Institutes
Max Planck Institutes carry out basic research in the fields of natural sciences, life sciences, the social and human sciences at locations throughout Germany. They supplement the work of universities and other research institutions with the diversity
of subjects they address. They have a research focus in some areas, whilst in others they provide a supplementary function. Furthermore, certain institutes of the Max Planck Society also provide services for university research. They make facilities and equipment available to a broad base of scientists - from telescopes and other large devices to special libraries and documentation collections.
The state capital Mainz is home to two Max Planck institutes: The Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, both of which are located on the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg University. Both institutes have maintained strong contacts and engaged in close cooperation with the university for decades.
